What’s the Future Of Ukraine?

Future of Ukraine

On the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution against Russia. Ukraine and the European Union co-sponsored the resolution. It called Russia an aggressor and demanded that Russian troops leave Ukraine. A total of 93 countries supported it. However, 18 countries, including the United States, Russia, Belarus, and North Korea, voted against it. This vote showed a big change in US foreign policy under President Donald Trump.

Unlike past US leaders, Trump is not fully supporting Ukraine. Instead, he wants direct peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump also pressured Ukraine to agree to a critical minerals deal in exchange for continued US support. This shows that Trump prefers business deals over military help.

The US proposed its own resolution, which did not call Russia an aggressor but suggested a general path to peace. Ukraine and European countries rejected this proposal, but Russia, however, welcomed it as a positive step. This disagreement showed that the US and its European allies are no longer fully united.

After a G7 meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Europe should become more independent from the US. Germany’s leader, Friedrich Merz, agreed, saying that Europe should rely more on itself.

On February 28, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Trump in the Oval Office. The meeting did not go well. Zelensky asked for more money and military aid from the US. He was willing to sign mineral deals but wanted a guarantee that the US would help Ukraine fight Russia. Trump refused.

Trump said that the war was Ukraine’s problem, not America’s. He indicated that direct US military action would be illegal and could lead to World War III.

Trump’s decision has made things more complicated for Ukraine. The US no longer wants to send large amounts of weapons and money. Ukraine now depends on Europe. However, many people in the EU do not want the war to continue. If Europe does not step up, Ukraine may struggle to defend itself.

Indeed, the UN vote showed that the US and its allies disagree on Ukraine’s future. European countries still want to fight Russia, but Trump wants to end the war through negotiations. His direct talks with Putin worry European leaders. They fear that Ukraine’s fate will be decided by political deals instead of military strength.

The big question now is

  • Can Ukraine continue to fight without US military help?
  • Or will Europe’s hesitation give Russia the upper hand?

The next few months will be critical in deciding the future of this war.

Note: Trump wants peace, and probably the war between Russia and Ukraine is going to end soon.
