The military demolished the sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 5, 2024. Thousands of video clips about the incident are circulating on social media. The military is breaking down the sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the leader who brought independence to Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971.
Why does the military have the power to break it? The sculpture is a significant part of the country’s history and a national treasure.
Does the military have the authority to break it? Why did the military suddenly take power?
The people of Bangladesh cannot accept what the government has done. This reaction is understandable. The people should rule the country as they vote for the government they prefer. However, they did not give permission to destroy a part of the country’s history and property.
Although people were angry and wanted to destroy the sculpture, the military took control of the site. If the military can control the site, they should also be able to protect the sculpture.
Personally, I do not support the Awami League government due to its terrible governance, but that does not mean we should demolish important parts of the country’s history. Yet, the military did just that.
If the military of a country goes wrong, what good can be expected from the country?
Overall, anti-India sentiment is spreading rapidly. Breaking the sculpture of the Father of the Nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on August 5, 2024, signals where Bangladesh might be heading for the second time. Will the new name be “Islamic Bangladesh?”
Is Pakistan taking back its East Pakistan after five decades, or is it just natural that the country is following its mother, where it was born?
